Sunday 18th September 2022 - Shrewsbury to Yorton

Shropshire Way Festival of Walks: Shrewsbury to Yorton
8.30 meet time, grade B

To showcase the beauty of our county and its diverse scenery the Shropshire Way Association co-ordinates a Festival of Walks each September by inviting all the county's walking groups to organise and lead a walk. The only stipulations are that the walks must be held during the Festival week (this year 17-25 September) and must include a section of the Shropshire Way

Shirley and Mike are champions for Stage 11 of the Way from Haughmond to Wem so know it like the back of their hands!  They have put together a 16 mile linear stretch starting at the Abbey and finishing at Yorton railway station where we'll catch a late afternoon train back to Shrewsbury. The walk will give us the chance to visit two of our very local hills and enjoy the fine views. We'll pick up the Shropshire Way at English Bridge and walk along the bank of the Severn to ascend Haughmond Hill by the edge of the quarry. The route then descends past the magnificent ruins of Haughmond Abbey, along the edge of Corbet Wood and up to the top of Grinshill Hill. From there itís a mile to Yorton station for the 16:02 train back to Shrewsbury. Fare £4.60 or £3 with a railcard.
