    Sunday 27 March 2022 - Mortimer Forest
    Leader: Gill Pursey - 07974 771258  / g.e.pursey@gmail.com

13 miles, 2400 feet of ascent, grade B

Meet at the Abbey at 8.30 am to car share (note clocks go forward the night before) where parking details will be advised. Please let me know if you wish to go direct. The journey time is approximately 50 minutes and distance from the Abbey about 31 miles.

This walk is far from being all in forest. We will start a couple of miles south of Ludlow to explore a very quiet corner of Shropshire where it meets neighbouring Herefordshire. Woodland and field paths, bridleways and tracks including stretches of the Mortimer and Herefordshire Trails, with a couple of short sections of quiet lane walking, take us to Burrington and old Richard's Castle, an idyllic spot where we can look at the ancient church and remains of the Norman castle. From there it's a steady ascent to High Vinnals, the highest point in Mortimer Forest offering lovely views east and west. The ascents overall are of the longer gradual variety rather than shorter and steep and there will be some good level sections too with an easy 1.5 mile descent back to the start point. There will be plenty of views to admire (weather permitting!) and the sights and sounds of spring to enjoy. Expect some good dry sections underfoot but, even without more rain, some mud too.
